Stephen Douglas Wood was the first born to Grayce Elizabeth and Orville Jones Wood on June
23,1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His brother Allan was born three years later. Steve grew up in the Sugar House area. He graduated in 1960 in the second graduating class of Highland High School.
As a young boy, Steve helped his neighbor, Miss Breech. He learned many skills working with
her, such as gardening and painting houses. She instilled values of hard work and the satisfaction of a job well done.
In his youth, Steve spent summers with his grandparents and his uncle in the Cedar City area
and Navajo Lake. Here he made memories that would last a lifetime. He helped his Nana prepare boats for the tourists and helped his Uncle Worth herd sheep. One day Granddad couldn't make it home, so ten-year-old Steve drove the truck and Granddad home.
Another favorite memory from his youth was riding horses with his friend, Weldon. It was even
more fun when the two of them were paid to ride a man's horse to keep it in shape.
Steve met Loraine Kay Adams, a country girl from Burley Idaho, when she moved to Sugarhouse
to attend cosmetology school. Steve was one of the guys who were the "welcoming committee" for all the cute girls to their neighborhood. Steve thought Kay was cute from first glance, but Kay thought Steve was too tall. He was 6'2" and she was 5' tall.
But, like every love story, he swept her off her feet. Within a year and a half they were married,
on November 2, 1963. They were sealed later in the Salt Lake Temple, on March 3, 1984.
Some of the best times of Steve's life were with his family; camping, fishing, hunting, boating -
anything that took him outdoors. The family cabin in Wanship was their favorite getaway.
His love of the Wild West carried into his adult life. Steve was John Wayne's biggest fan. He
could repeat dialogue from many of his movies and had a large collection of memorabilia.
Seeing John Wayne's collection of firearms in a museum in Cody, Wyoming was a lifetime highlight.
Steve worked at Sprouse-Reitz with his parents, and soon became a manager of his first store,
which was located at 2300 E 3900 S. He later opened stores in Glendale and in Rose Park.
All of the skills he learned throughout his life led to his favorite job, his career with Murray City
Power. He attended Metering School in Fort Collins for basic training, and then completed a three-year training program in Murray. He worked for Murray City Power for 23 years as a metering specialist until his retirement. He enjoyed his co-workers who became lifelong friends.
Steve will always be remembered for his attention to detail and for repairing anything and
everything with duct tape or black electrical tape. He loved to work on cars and was meticulous with anything to do with them. He will always also be remembered for witty and humorous remarks.
Steve and Kay served a 3-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in
Heber City as Fleet Maintenance Managers. This was great fun, especially for Steve, because he was able to work on the missionaries' vehicles. Kay made yummy food for the missionaries as they waited for their cars.
Kay and Steve's marriage of 59 years was an example of love, devotion, and sacrifice. Kay was an unwavering, loving, full-time caregiver at the end of Steve's time on earth. Even though Steve was in intense pain for many years, he never once complained or had a bad attitude. Family, friends, grandchildren and caretakers were touched by Steve's attitude of love and appreciation for them.
Steve is survived by his wife, Loraine Kay Wood, and children Stephanie (Lane) Stevens of Alpine, UT, Lisa (Rick) Peterson of Eureka, MT, Jeff (Evelyn) Wood of Heber City, UT, his 13 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren, Scott and Christel Swasey and their children; Steve's brother, Allan Wood (Patty Dellinger) and their three children, and seven brothers and sister-in-laws and spouses. Steve is preceded by his parents, his in-laws, Monroe and Jeanne Adams, and twin grandsons.
