Sheldon Scott Wardwell passed away on July 31, 2021 in London England forcing the world to say goodbye to a selfless champion of peace and human dignity. He was 34-years-old.
Sheldon was born April 28, 1987, in Vernal, Utah. He spent his early years in Southern California, where, at the top of his class,, he gave his kindergarten graduation speech. Sheldon also excelled at football and wrestling, not to be outdone by his older brother. Sheldon attended Jr. high and high school in Smithfield Utah. He was dedicated to his academics & sports. His accomplishments included, state wrestling, high school lacrosse, Eli Wrestling, Boys All State and receiving the Hugh OBrian 4 year collage scholarship. Among his accomplishments he floated from 1st damn to 2nd damn on an lce log; naked. He also road the Aggie Bull on campus; naked. By that time, Sheldon’s charismatic personality was already drawing many friends through his outgoingness, inviting nature and willingness to rally together in the most difficult times.
At age 16, Sheldon had found his calling in humanitarian work, starting that journey in Guatemala. During his Senior year he founded the Utah chapter of A's for Africa. In 2013, he took on the role of a nonviolent peacekeeper in South Sudan just as the country was spiraling into a brutal civil war. As the conflict escalated into genocide, Sheldon and his colleagues rushed to cities such as Bentu to protect helpless victims of the carnage. Sheldon’s team regularly evacuated women and children from explosive, indiscriminate waves of violence, sometimes acting as a political human shields to make sure the women and children wouldn’t be assaulted and murdered. Several of Sheldon’s colleagues died during this time, yet he pressed on with the vital work.
Sheldon witnessed sights in South Sudan that no one’s eyes should ever see. Though these experiences left him with emotional scars that he carried for life, Sheldon never stopped trying to help and elevate the communities he had bonded with so deeply. Sheldon’s last passion project was the construction of the Sanaag Specialty Hospital in Somaliland, a facility Sheldon knew would alleviate the numbing infant death rates he’d confronted there.
Sheldon, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is survived by his wife, Paola Montilla Guerrero, his mother, Tamie Wardle Harrison (Lou), his father, Scott Kenneth Wardwell (Yadira) and a large and loving family that includes siblings Alisa (Walton) and Robert Manriquez, Stephine Wardwell and John Michael, Camron Walton, Steven Wardwell, Stacy and Scott Anderson, Jackson and Bre Ndayambaji, Buster Harrison (Tawnya) Jessica Harrison, and Stepfanie Harrison.
