Ruth Durrant Mahoney Carlile, age 92, passed peacefully through the veil on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 surrounded by her family. We know she is excited to be reunited with her husband, Grant C Mahoney after a 48 year separation.
Ruth was born on August 8, 1930 to Kenneth and Lona Durrant in Murray, Utah. Her early years were spent in Midvale, Hoytsville, and Hailstone, Utah. She attended Wasatch High School in Heber City where she excelled academically and socially. She was a proud graduate in the class of 1948.
Ruth Durrant and Grant Mahoney were married May 9, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple and are the parents of four sons and one daughter. Ruth and Grant had 25 busy, happy years of family life before he was tragically taken along with their son, Phil, in an accident in Daniel’s Canyon. Ruth’s unwavering testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Plan of Happiness helped her press forward in life. She had great faith in the Savior and acknowledged His help and guidance throughout her life.
Ruth was a dedicated, loving mother and homemaker. She was an excellent cook. Her bread, rolls, and pies were legendary and she won the Sweepstakes Award for her cherry pie at the Wasatch County Fair.
She created many beautiful pieces of handwork with her embroidery, crochet, sewing and quilting skills. She had a gorgeous yard and garden and enjoyed sharing her flowers and produce. She loved to read. She loved to dance and often said she would rather dance than eat.
Ruth was an avid sports fan and always supported her children and grandchildren in their activities. She loved to watch the Utah Jazz and BYU.
Ruth married Melvin Carlile on August 10, 1983. They enjoyed working together, traveling, and participating in activities with the Sons of the Pioneers. They served a mission in the Montana Billings Mission and worked with Native Americans of the Sioux Tribe.
Her life was one of service. She served others with love and empathy and was always available to help anyone in need. She was dedicated to her callings in the Church and especially enjoyed her time with the Young Women. She volunteered at Wasatch County Hospital as a Pink Lady and was an example of faith and courage. Ruth’s fun personality made her a favorite school lunch worker at Wasatch High School.
Ruth is survived by her children, Scott (Ginn) Mahoney, Bryan (Deanna) Mahoney, and Brenda (David) Morris; 18 Grandchildren and their spouses, and 60 Great-grandchildren; Sisters-in-Law, Doris Mahoney, Glenna Lloyd, and Anna Durrant; Stepfamily, Neil (Diane) Carlile, Allan (Cynthie) Carlile, Garn (Suzanne) Carlile, 11 Grandchildren, and 28 Great-grandchildren.
