Riley Michael Winterton

January 16, 1980 — May 23, 2025

Riley Michael Winterton, 45, of Heber City, Utah, “The Iron Horse Rebel,” rode his final ride on May 23, 2025. He passed doing what he loved most—canyon riding without a care in the world, his heart pointed East, chasing freedom where the wild things are.

Born January 16, 1980, Riley was a true original—straightforward, bold, fiercely loyal, and endlessly talented. He was on his way to the family cabin that night to finish preparations for his mother’s celebration of life, having lost her just weeks prior. That sense of duty and love, even in grief, defined Riley.

He was the beloved son of Michael Winterton and Melanie Meadows, and a proud brother to Robert Watts and Chase Watts.

Riley met the love of his life, Sarah McNeill, in the sixth grade. Their love endured and deepened over the years, culminating in marriage on 12/12/12. Together they built a life in Center Creek, Utah, and raised three sons who were the center of Riley’s world: Korbin J. Winterton, Michael R. Winterton, and Kai R. Winterton. Riley’s greatest passion and pride were his boys, and every decision he made reflected his devotion to them.

A true jack of all trades—and master of every one—Riley had a gift for craftsmanship. Whether it was construction, mechanics, or artful renovation, everything he touched carried his signature style and care. He was in the midst of remodeling the family home, and even in its unfinished state, his vision is clear, his touch unmistakable.

Quiet and observant, yet magnetic in conversation, Riley left an impression on everyone he met. He spoke plainly, never bluffed the ones he loved, and made you feel seen. His circle of friends, whom he and Sarah cherished like family, was bound by deep love, trust, and respect, as follows Chris Barr, Josh Tadd, Josh Clift, Karri Broadhead, Tony Luna.

Riley was preceded in death by his father Michael Winterton, his beloved wife Sarah Winterton, his mother Melanie Meadows, his aunt Susan Winterton, and the beloved family dog Banjo Winterton.

Per his wishes, Riley will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Riley left this world on two wheels, but his spirit rides on—in the mountains he loved, in the home he shaped, in the boys he raised, and in the hearts of all who loved him.

In honor of Riley, we ask that you ride free, speak true, and love fiercely—just like he did.
