Rhea LaVaur Huber Merkley, 88, passed away Friday, December 11, 2015, in Heber City, Utah of causes incident to age. She was born June 6, 1927 in Lapoint, Utah to Leroy Huber and Vera Johannah Taylor Huber.
Rhea graduated from Altera High School in Lapoint. After attending Brigham Young University for a year, she returned to work at Zion’s Bank in Vernal, Utah. It was there that she caught the eye of a young World War II veteran, Douglas L. Merkley. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple, on November 20, 1947.
Rhea was active in the LDS Church, serving in many different capacities. She was an energetic Cub Scout leader and a faithful visiting teacher. She and her husband, Douglas served in the California, Sacramento Mission from 1988-1989. At age 80, she accepted a calling in the nursery. She enjoyed membership in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the Belle Lettre Club.
She was devoted to her husband of 68 years and her children. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and canning. She patiently shared her expertise with her children and grandchildren. Her green thumb and persistent nurturing produced beautiful flowers of all varieties. Rhea’s life was spent in the quiet service of those close to her. She loved her family. She found particular delight in reading to and playing games with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children; Chris (Kathleen), Kevin (Patricia), Robert (Jennifer), and Marie (Frost) Steele, 17 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren, sisters JoAnn (Brad) Nelson, Doris Sessions, brothers Clayton (Beth) Huber and Martin (Sue) Huber. She is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas, her parents, a daughter Maureen, and her siblings, Dale Huber, Larry Huber, June Wooley, and Dean Huber.

A viewing will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the 4th Ward LDS Chapel, 715 East 600 South in Heber City. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Perpetual Education Fund or General Missionary Fund of the Church.
