Reed H Bezzant

Reed H. Bezzant, age 89, passed away on September 13, 2018, in Provo, Utah.
Reed was born October 9, 1928, in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Matthew and Cora Olpin Bezzant, the fourth of six children. Reed attended Pleasant Grove high school where he excelled in football and basketball. He also, played the trumpet in the Howard Nelson Dance Band. In the evenings during World War II, he, as well as many other teenagers, worked at the US Steel Geneva Works sweeping up and doing odd jobs. These teenagers were known as Junior Commandos.

On July 9, 1947, Reed married Bonnie Loye Ivers in the Manti Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and were blessed with four children. Reed earned an associate degree in Chemistry and went to work as a chemist for the US Steel Geneva Works where he was employed for 37 years. In 1951 he and Bonnie moved to Midway. In addition to his job at the steel mill he operated a dairy farm with the cows milking schedule rotating with his shift work. During the Korean conflict his father in-law, Leland Ivers, was called to serve a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Reed took a leave of absence from the steel mill to run Leland’s store, Ivers Mercantile.

Reed was an active member of the community and a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Reed served on the irrigation board, planning commission, city council and was the mayor of Midway from 1990 to 1993. His church service included many callings including 1st councilor in the Midway 1st Ward bishopric and temple worker in the Provo and Mt. Timpanogos temples. In 1997, Reed and Bonnie accepted a mission call to serve in the Connecticut Hartford Mission where Reed served as the Branch President of the Central Falls Branch. Reed was devoted to his wife and family and always put them first. His life exemplified hard work and selfless service to others.

Reed was preceded in death by his daughter Vickie (Alan) Cluff, his parents, two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, three of his children Marilynn (Leon) Holland of Millville, UT., Cheryl (Mark) Whiting and Kim (Suzanne) Bezzant, of Midway UT., seventeen grandchildren, fifty-eight great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all those who have helped and provided assistance during this time. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Courtyard at Jamestown assisted living center who has provided so much care and kindness during the last few months of Reed’s life.

Funeral services will be held on Wed. Sept. 19th at 11:00 a.m. at the Legacy Ward Building located at 250 East 200 South, Midway, Utah. Viewings will be held on Tues. Sept. 18th from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wed. Sept. 19th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Legacy Ward Chapel
Interment will be at the Midway City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Humanitarian Fund.
