Patsy Holmes Schrader

October 12, 1944 — August 27, 2021

Patsy Carole Hilton Holmes Schrader was born in Heber, Utah, on October 12, 1944, to David (Bud) and Fay Hilton. She passed away August 27, 2021. From a young age, she learned the value of patience, and many life skills, cleaning rooms and helping travelers in her family’s motel. She graduated from Wasatch High as an honor student where she was active in speech, drama, and music. She won awards in 4-H sewing and public speaking competitions.

Patsy and a few of her girlfriends moved to Provo to begin university studies. After a year of carefully considering the boys BYU had to offer, Patsy convinced her Heber 1st ward primary alum, and Heber farm boy, to transfer from USU down to the ‘Y’. Soon afterwards, Patsy and her farmer, George Holmes, were married in the SLC Temple on September 3, 1965.

Patsy graduated from BYU with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. She taught kindergarten through third grade in Hawaii, Granite, and Wasatch School districts for 38 years. She loved teaching and was very good at it.

In addition to being a supportive ‘dairy farmer’s wife’, and beloved elementary school teacher, Patsy also managed 16 apts, spear-headed multiple 4-H clubs, ran the Dairy Princess program, bottled fruits and vegetables, sewed new clothes and dresses, patched countless farm pants, and prepared home cooked meals daily. She was awarded Utah Young Homemaker of the Year in 1976.

In 2019, the combined Utah/Idaho statewide Dairy Princess program awarded Patsy one of only 2 ever Lifetime Service awards for her 43 years of volunteer service to the program.

For church service, people assumed Patsy had a lifetime calling as ward Chorister. She also served as Primary President, Stake Drama director, and Relief Society Presidency, among many other callings.

Patsy was known as a to-do list whisperer. One of the reasons she was able to accomplish so much is attributed to her special relationship with to-do lists. She could create, organize, cross-reference, and assimilate to-do lists like Chopin could write and conduct concertos.

If anyone was unfortunate enough to have nothing to do, Patsy was reliably there to bless them with a list of chores, and more importantly, the feeling of having completed something productive.

In retirement, Patsy did not slow down. She married Ted Schrader on Jan. 17, 2015. Patsy and Ted happily traversed Hawaii, Mexico, and the mountain west, visiting family, exploring new communities, and stumbling into new adventures. At the ripe young age of 70, she attempted to stare down a Yellowstone bison... and lost. Shortly after getting out of the hospital, she bought a camper trailer so she and Ted could accelerate their adventure game. To that end, she and Ted have camped at Bryce Canyon, Moab, Bear Lake, Starvation, Coeur d'Alene, ID., Capitol Reef, and many more.

We imagine she’s now having a sweet reunion with her parents: Bud and Fay; and three siblings who have preceded her in death: Joe Hilton, Neil Hilton, and Bonnie Hilton Montgomery. As well as many other beloved friends and family.

Her children: Malia (Walt) Young, Colby (Maradean) Holmes, Emily (Julio) Rodriguez, Hilary (Adam) Richards; and her 15 Grandchildren, will never forget her and are grateful for the time they got to spend with her.
