Nelda Jean Casper Duke

January 29, 1931 — June 20, 2023

Our devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Nelda Jean Casper Duke, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2023, at the age of 92.

Nelda was born on January 29, 1931 to William Glen and Joyce Viola Casper in Daniel, Utah, where she has lived her entire life.

She married Neil Hal Duke on April 1, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have 4 children, Gayla, David, Paul and Wendy, 13 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren whom she loved and adored.

Nelda was loved by all. People of all ages were drawn to her by her sense of humor and quick wit. She had a fun, spunky personality and always made everyone feel welcome and included.

Nelda’s life was a life of service. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings. Her favorite was serving with the young women as Camp Director. She served a mission with her husband in Ghana, Africa from 1996 to 1997, and fell in love with the people there. She gave everything she had and literally came home with just the clothes on her back. She made countless beautiful quilts and donated hundreds of them to the humanitarian effort.

She always loved spending time outdoors and was a hard worker. From the time she was young, she helped her dad on the farm doing any, and all, chores including: picking rocks, irrigating fields, mowing, raking and baling hay. She enjoyed gardening and had a beautiful garden every year.

She loved playing, coaching and watching sports. She attended Brigham Young University, majoring in Physical Education and coached Girls Basketball at Wasatch High School.

Nelda worked for the Wasatch County Health Department for 27 years. She loved her co-workers and all the people she was privileged to meet.

She found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved being around people and always saw the best in them. She had a positive outlook on life and a happy disposition. She liked to cook and probably most everyone in Daniel, at one time or another, was a recipient of a meal, banana bread or her famous sugar cookies.

She loved her family and enjoyed planning family vacations and keeping holiday traditions. One of her favorite traditions was the Christmas Treasure Hunt, where she would send family all over the valley chasing clues. Later, as the family grew, she would write short, personalized poems for each family member.

Some of her other favorites were her little dog Muffy, chocolate, Quench It, riding around the valley, Costco and most of all spending time with her family.

Nelda is survived by her children: Gayla (Kevin) DiStefano, David Duke, Wendy (Kipp) Bangerter. Daughter-in-law, Laurie Duke, 13 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Brother, Grant Casper and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Neil Duke and son, Paul (Bummer) Duke. Parents, William and Joyce Casper. Sisters, Lola (Clay) Carlile, LaVern (Val) Ellis. Sister-in-law, Eleanora Casper.
