Michael Anthony Spanos, age 83, passed away February 7, 2024, at home in Heber City, Utah.
Mike was born in Park City, Utah, June 29, 1940, to Emmanouil Andonios (Mike) Mago Spano and Ozzie Bell (Joan) Henderson. After graduating from Park City High School in 1958, he immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served nine years in its security forces.
Mike married Fern Clark on August 23, 1969. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He earned bachelor’s degrees in sociology/criminology and juvenile justice from the University of Utah, and in law enforcement and corrections from Weber State University. After working in sales for 12 years at Sears, Mike served 20 years as Wasatch County Sheriff. Through his foresight, determination and untiring effort the Wasatch County Justice Center was dedicated in April 1996. He also worked four years with Utah State Corrections, and a year as a judge in Wasatch County's Justice Court.
Mike had a fervent testimony of Jesus Christ as a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many leadership and teaching positions including bishop of Heber City 6th Ward and in the Heber East Stake Presidency. With Fern, he completed missions to: Winnipeg, Canada, serving the First Nation people around Regina, Saskatchewan; Durban, South Africa, serving the Zulu people on the Madadeni and Ezakheni townships and the town of Ladysmith; and Singapore serving the Ibon people of East and West Malaysia. The couple also served in the Heber City LDS employment center. Mike was also dedicated to family history, faithfully indexing well over one million names for use by researchers.
Mike is survived by his wife, Fern, and children Kent (Cathy), Kipp (Wendy), Todd (Julie), Daren (Sally), Sue (Wells), Rhet (CinDee), Meghan (Shawn) and Seth (Janice), 38 grandchildren, 70-plus great-grandchildren and eight foster children. He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Blood, and is also survived by siblings Joanne Sweatfield, Mary Arnold, Tony Spanos, and Jerry Spanos.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and again on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, from 9:00 – 10:30 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM at the Heber City Utah North Stake Center, 521 East 500 North, Heber City, Utah 84032. Interment will follow at the Park City Cemetery, 1300 Kearns Boulevard, Park City, Utah 84060.
