Marvel Giles Defa, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 21, 2026, in Salt Lake City.
Marvel was born on December 12, 1937 to George Alfred Giles and Grace Giles in Altonah, Utah. She married the love of her life, Murray Defa, on September 17, 1955. They had five boys, Guy, Scott, Val, Kip and Dermont.
Marvel was an amazing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life centered around loving and supporting her family. She spent most of her years cheering on and “wrangling” Murray and her boys, never missing a game, event, or important moment. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and her presence could always be counted on.
Becoming a grandmother filled Marvel’s heart with immeasurable joy. She loved each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren deeply and uniquely, making every one of them feel special in their own way. She was a hero to all of them. Her family was the center of her world.
Marvel was also known for being an incredible cook. Her annual Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings became treasured family traditions filled with laughter, chaos, love, and unforgettable meals. Everyone eagerly looked forward not only to her delicious cooking, but also to receiving one of her beautiful handmade quilts — gifts stitched with love that will continue to comfort all of us for generations.
Marvel leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, tradition, and devotion to family that will never be forgotten. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew and loved her. Rest in happiness Grandma, we know Grandpa & Kip are taking good care of you. Until we meet again.
Marvel is survived by her sons, Guy Defa, Scott Defa, Val (Toni) Defa, Dermont (Michelle) Defa; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and brother, Nolan Giles.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Murray Defa; son, Kip Defa; and parents, George and Grace Giles.
