Margaret Ann Sumsion Clarke

On May 10, 2024, our dear mother, grandmother, sister and friend Margaret Ann Sumsion Clarke (82), completed her earthly journey returning home to her Heavenly Father and the loving embrace of her family members beyond this earthly veil. Ann passed away unexpectedly, due to heart failure, painlessly and peacefully at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Ann was born on December 4, 1941 in Provo, Utah to Frederick Frank Sumsion and Margaret Mae Thomas and grew up in a loving and faith-filled home with her parents, sister Madeline and brothers Frank, Mark, and Ernie.

Ann was proud to be part of the Provo High School Class of ‘60 and after high school attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and Laie, Hawaii as well as Heritage School of Cosmetology.

Ann married her high school sweetheart, Wayne Sabey Clarke, on September 10, 1962 and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple October 17, 1972. Together they raised their four children Kelly, Colleen, Wayne Jr. and Char, in a loving and adventure-filled home nestled in the Butler 11th Ward in the Cottonwood Heights area of Salt Lake City.

She cherished her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including Relief Society President, Ward Activities Leader, Primary Chorister, Cub Scout Leader, Homemaking Leader and many others.

Ann loved playing cards and board games with her children and grandchildren, and almost always won with unexpected “grandma’s rules” at their Timber Lakes cabin. She was the life of countless parties. She enjoyed family motorhome trips through the US and Canada, camping and waterskiing at Lake Powell, annual fishing trips to Fish Lake and traveled to many countries around the world. As a young woman, Ann was a ballerina, swim teacher, and ski instructor.

Ann is survived by daughter Kelly Ann (David Kelly) Hewlett, Pleasant View, Utah; daughter Colleen (Derek) Marquis, Lindon, Utah; daughter-in-law Erin Clarke, Dana Point, California; daughter Charlene (Jeff) Dawson, Heber, Utah; brother Ernest (Terry) Sumsion, St. George, Utah; brother Mark (Jan) Sumsion, Provo, Utah; 14 grandchildren,14 great-grandchildren, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Ann was preceded in death by Wayne Sr. and their son, Wayne Jr. (Erin) as well as her parents, Fred and Margaret Sumsion, brother Frank (Gay and Pat) Sumsion and sister Madeline (Jim) Westover.

Our beloved Ann Clarke always kept everyone laughing, sometimes scratching our heads, and often blushing. To be sure, her grandchildren will forever be telling “Grandma Ann stories” that will be passed down for generations to come!

The interment will occur at the Heber City Cemetery on Tuesday, May 28th at 1:00 PM.
