Lynn D Thacker, died of natural causes on July 19, 2021, age 87, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 16, 1933 to Ralph Alonzo and Ethel Jacklin Thacker who lived in Daniel, south of Heber City, Utah.
Lynn graduated from Wasatch High School in 1951 and attended Brigham Young University, where in 1960 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History. At BYU, Lynn served as the Editor of the yearbook, the Banyan, applying his lifetime love of the English language and photography. During a break in his studies, Lynn served on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Hawaiian Islands and spent two years with the U.S. Army in South Korea. Lynn continued graduate studies in English literature at BYU and the University of Maryland, where he passed the oral and written exams for the Doctor of Philosophy degree. After this, he taught English at Mount Saint Mary’s College in Maryland. It was at this time that he married his wife, Cheryl, whom he first met and fell in love with 10 years before at BYU. Due to a challenging economy (especially for English professors), Lynn put his teaching career on hold, and began to work as a building contractor and carpenter, utilizing skills that his father had taught him as a young boy. Lynn was a perfectionist. Whether it was reciting a poem from memory at a wedding (which he did on numerous occasions to great accolades) or completing the fine finish work in a classical colonial home, Lynn insisted that everything be done with absolute precision and care. These values earned him the respect of many who sought out his talents as a skilled carpenter, writer, editor, mentor and friend. In his community, Lynn was actively involved in establishing Daniel Township and changing the Wasatch County Commission to seven members rather than three. He was a devout member of the LDS Church. He had a passion for literature, and found ways to incorporate it in meaningful ways in life. He will be missed dearly.
Lynn is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and his children Kelley (Thayne) Ewell, Necia (Bruce) Horrocks, Jonathan (Phetravanh) Thacker, Kimberly (Jeff) Kummer, Karen (Jason) Hales, and Daniel (Akiko) Thacker, his siblings Hilda Patterson and Reed (Kathleen) Thacker, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 11am at the Daniel LDS Ward Building. A viewing will be held on Wednesday evening at the church from 6 to 8pm as well as Thursday prior to services from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Zoom link to join live at:
