Kenneth David Lovell, son of Thomas and Mary (Wilson) Lovell, was born in Murray, Utah, on September 7, 1954; and died in Midway, Utah, on July 12, 2024. His days ended in peace and relief after a four-year battle with ALS—Lou Gherig’s disease. In the months and weeks preceding his passing, Ken expressed an almost giddy excitement at being reunited with family and loved ones.
Ken spent the early years of his life in the western United States but considers Oklahoma his home. A graduate of Sooner High School in Bartlesville, Okla., Ken attended Brigham Young University before serving a mission in Spain for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That mission was a founding experience for Ken’s deep testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ and of His restored church, and of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Following his mission, Ken returned to BYU, where he met Susan (Sydenham). They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple. After graduation from BYU in 1978, they moved back to Bartlesville, and Ken attended law school at the University of Tulsa.
Ken and Susie reared their family in Tulsa, Okla. Together they enjoyed road trips to the mountains and skiing in Red River, New Mexico. For most of his career, Ken worked for Oneok, an energy company. After he retired in 2006, Ken and Susie left the great plains for the mountains of Utah, where they settled in the Heber Valley.
Aside from spending time with family, what Ken most enjoyed was serving the Lord. An abiding love for and trust in the Savior and love for the people he served were hallmarks of his priesthood service. He held many positions of responsibility in the Church, including bishop, high councilor, stake president, and patriarch.
After retirement, he and Susie were called to serve three additional missions in Chile and Spain. Through these and other opportunities to serve the Lord, Ken’s example of love and his patient gospel teaching blessed the lives of many people around the world. In all of his callings, Ken always expressed appreciation for Susie’s support and magnifying influence.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents and an older sister, Robyn.
Surviving Ken are his wife Susie, their three children—Aaron (Annika) Lovell of Stansbury Park, Utah; Karen (Cameron) Lange, of San Antonio, Tex.; and Darin (Mike) Brooks of Overland Park, Kan.—and 11 grandchildren.
