Kelly Jo Thompson Petrin

March 4, 1972 — January 29, 2021

The world lost one of its most beautiful and special people on January 29th, 2021 with the passing of Kelly Thompson Petrin. Born to Conrad and Jean Thompson on March 4, 1972 in Des Moines, IA, Kelly was the eternal optimist always walking on the sunny side of the street. Devoted big sister to Aaron Thompson, she was the picture of Midwest spirit, goodness and honesty as anyone she ever met would agree. Her ability to lift people up when they were feeling low and make them believe in better things to come was truly remarkable.
Among her best qualities was her uncompromising pursuit of happiness and adventure which led her from Des Moines, to Ames, to Kansas City, to Denver and finally to Park City. The family and friends she met along the way were the center of her life. She never passed up a Cyclones basketball game, the chance to explore new places, nap under a comfy blanket or eat any salted snack and had one of the all-time greatest laughs.
Though later in life, she met the love of her life, her husband Greg and they married on top of a mountain in Park City in September 2019. He was continually amazed at how she was able to focus on the positive and let go of the negative. She made him a far better man than he could have ever dreamed of and he’ll be forever grateful for the love, patience and understanding she gave to him each day.
Despite facing the toughest of health circumstances, Kelly never lost her optimism and faced it with equal parts bravery and grace. With an unknown future, she and Greg pursued their dream of building a home together in the mountains. Her last days in Park City were filled with peace and extraordinary support of her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Kelly and Greg ask for any gifts be in the form of donations to the American Brain Tumor Association (abta.org – Honoree and Recipient Kelly Thompson, Kthomp5280@gmail.com ) whose mission is to advance the understanding and treatment of this disease with goals of improving, extending and ultimately saving the lives of those impacted by this diagnosis.
A celebration of life will take place later this year in Des Moines when friends and family can safely and freely travel.
