It is with heavy hearts we inform you of the unexpected passing of our dear husband, father, bishop, and friend, John V. Labrum. John, 51, passed away on May 8, 2014 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
John was born in Meadow, Utah on September 8, 1962 to DeLynn V. and Betty Mae Labrum and was the youngest of five children. Growing up on a dairy farm, he learned at an early age the value of hard work. He attended Millard High School and participated in many sports. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Florida Tampa Mission.
After his mission, John worked his way through college fighting fires for the Bureau of Land Management. After graduating from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, John took the CPA exam and passed it on his first attempt. He went on to work in Dallas, Detroit, France, and Spain for Electronic Data Systems.
It was while working in Detroit that he met his sweetheart, Sandra Marie Allison. John and Sandra were married on December 10, 1988 in the LDS Manti Temple. They moved to the state of Washington where he worked for Safeco Insurance and later moved to Provo, Utah where he worked for Colonial Mortgage. However, most of John’s professional career was spent working for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most recently, while living in Heber City, Utah, John worked as a field manager over the LDS welfare processing facilities, in charge of quality assurance and food safety.
John had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and served in many callings in the LDS Church. He especially enjoyed working with the Young Men in the scouting program and was an Eagle Scout himself. He served in the Elder’s Quorum presidency, as a counselor in several bishoprics, as a faithful home teacher, and on the Stake High Council. He most recently served as the bishop of the Heber 9th Ward and greatly loved and cared for all those he served.
Those who knew John also knew of his tremendous love for his daughter, Brinley Nicole; son-in-law, Cameron Patrick Zabriskie; and son, Bronson D., who is currently serving an LDS mission in the West Virginia, Charleston Mission. John felt greatly blessed by his children, and they brought so much joy to his life.
John also loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, golfer, and fly fisherman. He enjoyed playing games with his family, laughing, hiking, and traveling. He had a deep love for others, and his cheerfulness, strong faith, and genuine concern for those around him has touched the hearts of many. He is truly loved and will be greatly missed.
John is preceded in death by his father, DeLynn V. Labrum; his brother, Lynn G. Labrum; his brother-in-law, Clayton Allred; and his nephew, David Allred.
