Jane Giles passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Oct. 16th, 2026 in the Murray hospital. Jane was born in Heber City, Utah on April 2, 1948 to Harry and Reba Kohler. She is survived by her husband Marty Giles; children: Victoria (Eric) Burtcher, Richard Ashley, Melissa (Daniel) Cavan, Michael Hinkson; sister-in-law: Joyce Kohler; 8 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents: Harry and Reba Kohler, and brother: Dale Kohler.
Jane graduated from Wasatch High School in 1966. She started college at BYU and while working as a lab tech in the bug collection she met Richard Ashley. They were married in February of 1968 and had 3 amazing children, Vicki, Richard, and Melissa eventually settling in New Hampshire. They later divorced and Jane married Roy Hinkson. She had a 4th amazing and energetic child Michael. Jane soon became home sick and moved back to Heber to be closer to family. She held various jobs to support the family working at subway, a scrapbooking company, and doing taxes eventually meeting Claude Hicken who hired her to work for the irrigation company (Soil Conservation District and Central Utah Water) where she stayed until she semi-retired in 2016. During her time with the tax company, she went through a second divorce but later met and married the love of her life Marty Giles. Even after retiring she kept busy teaching a personal history class for UVU, being involved with the Daughter’s of Utah Pioneers (DUP), and running a writing group, while still taking minutes and doing finances for the irrigation company.
Jane was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and rarely missed a church meeting. She had a strong testimony and held callings as a primary, Sunday school, and relief society teacher as well as chorister, temple worker, and was in the relief society, primary, and young women presidencies. She was a stellar teacher and loved coming up with creative ways to teach lessons to any age.
Jane’s top priority was her family, and she went to great lengths to spend as much time as possible with them, but she was also passionate about family history, journaling, scrapbooking, gardening, thrifting, rockhounding, camping, bird watching, picnics, and saving money. She was an accomplished canner and made the best pickles, often handing out canned goods to her kids for Christmas. She loved collecting salt and pepper shakers, nativities, and anything that would save her money down the road.
Her absence will be noticed by many in Heber Valley and the town will not be the same without her. She has left a large hole in her family of which will miss her deeply. However, we all look forward to seeing her again when we cross into the next life and see her smiling face and open arms.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, October 23, 2026 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1365 East Center Street, Heber City, Utah. A viewing will be held at the church on Thursday, October 22, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Midway Cemetery.
