James Joseph “Rabbit” Maxwell, born 13 August 1942, to James and Helen Maxwell in Eureka, Utah. He passed away on 22 July, 2024 in his home after a long valiant battle from the effects of years working underground in Mines & Tunnels. Rabbit worked on several mining & tunnel projects in Utah, Montana, California, Oregon, Alaska, Washington DC, and Texas. After mining he worked for the State of Utah in the road department and as water master for Hanna Water District.
He was best known for his amazing talent as a professional wood and stone carver, adding unique character to whatever stump or log he could find. These heirlooms will forever be a cherished treasure for those lucky enough to have received one of his carvings.
Rabbit, as he was affectionately known to everyone, was beloved by all who knew him, and while being a good man, by his own admission he was far from perfect, which usually resulted in him throwing out the “do as I say, not as I do” line when he wanted to make a point.
Rabbit married Gloria Jean “Dode” Brereton on 22 December 1981 and the two of them were a fun and loving couple - two peas in a pod, you might say. Each had children from a previous marriage, and blending the two families was important to them both. They also took the opportunity to change the life of another young man, whom they opened their home to without a second thought, making him a part of the family as well.
Rabbit is proceeded in death by his loving wife, Dode, his mother Helen, his father James, and his sister Grace Jackson. He is survived by his sisters MaryEllen/Richard Bate and Rose See, his children, Kevin/Kathy Maxwell, Lisa Gardner, Billy/Trudy Brereton, Gidget/Morris Carroll, and Monty/Susannah Nay. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren.
Burial will be Thursday, 25 July 2024 at the Heber City Cemetery, 11:00 am local time. His family and friends are honored to hold A Celebration of Life on his birthday, 13 August 2024 at Billy and Trudy’s home in Heber City, Utah. Address to be provided at a later date.
