Gilbert Clyde Olsen passed away among family in the early morning hours of August 22, 2024 at the age of 90. Born May 14,1934 in Provo, UT to Clyde & Zelta (Stubbs) Olsen, Gilbert grew up on a dairy farm in Provo. He attended Provo High School graduating in 1952 and having participated in boxing, track and field, and football - receiving All-State football honors. He later attended BYU and studied business. He also served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Northern States Mission.
He married Wendy Ashton in 1960 and together they have three sons – Jed (Shelly) Olsen (Daniels, UT), Jeffery (Tamara -deceased) (Daniels, UT) and Justin (Julie) Olsen (South Jordan, UT). Gilbert later married Karen Fenstermaker and together they have a wonderful daughter JuliAnn (Justin) Woodward (Draper, UT). Later in life, Gilbert married his childhood and high school classmate Mary Tregeagle Dunn after they reconnected following their Provo High 50 Year Class Reunion. Gilbert and Mary enjoyed nearly a decade together until Mary passed away in 2011.
Gilbert served his country with a thirty-year career in the Utah National Guard and Army Reserves. He was selected for Officer Candidate School and his leadership benefited divisions of the Military Police, artillery and counter-terrorism as he served and ultimately retired as Lieutenant Colonel.
Gilbert was entrepreneurial in nature, having owned a Phillips 66 service station in Provo and running a beef cattle ranch in Wallsburg for many years. In 1972, he bought a dairy farm in Charleston where he taught his children to work hard together. Gilbert later founded and grew Mountain Valley Log Homes into a successful log home company in Heber. Gilbert also served on numerous community and industry committees, including Wasatch County Board of Health.
Gilbert’s favorite thing and pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved their visits as they always brought a smile to his face and warmth to his heart. He loved visiting with his children and listening to his daughter JuliAnn and other grandchildren sing and reminiscing with all. Grandpa Gilbert will certainly be missed. There will be a void of his physical presence, but his legacy and the warm loving relationships will certainly endure.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents Clyde Melvin & Zelta Merle (Stubbs) Olsen, brother-in-law Mark Christensen, daughter-in-law Tamara (Spencer) Olsen and grandson Griffin Clyde Olsen. Gilbert is survived by his children, fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, siblings Virgean Christensen and Grant Olsen and seven nieces and nephews.
Gilbert has been a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Services will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at the Cobblestone Ward building located at: 1661 East 980 South, Heber City, UT – Viewing 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.; Funeral 11:00 a.m. Interment in the Heber City Cemetery, 680 North 550 East, Heber City, UT immediately after the funeral services.
