Gerald Willard Day

Gerald Willard Day, our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 unexpectedly at the age of 92 at his home in St George.
Born on May 3, 1925 to Willard Albert and Arvilla Myler Day in Spanish Fork, Gerald moved to the Uintah Basin as an infant. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he served in the Navy during World War II, mainly in the Philippines.
On a ten-day leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Lela Young on March 14, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. He graduated with honors from the University of Utah. They raised six children in Salt Lake, Bountiful, and Heber City. After Gerald cared for her for several years, Lela passed away in 2008.
Gerald loved people and spent his life serving his customers and employees in the grocery industry for Safeway and Albertsons. In 1972, he purchased the Heber City Exchange and opened the first Day’s Market. His company provided jobs for generations of family members and friends, contributing immeasurably to the community.
He served in many civic capacities including on the board of directors and as Chairman of the Board the Utah Food Industries Association and on the board and as Chairman of the Board of Associated Food Stores.
He married Gloria Brown on September 27, 2008. Their union brought joy and love into both the Day and Brown family.
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served in countless church callings, most recently as a full-time missionary with his wife Gloria in St. George.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Gloria; his children Elaine (Kirk) Hunsaker, Heber, Byron (Lesa) Day, Midway, Alan (Kathy) Day, Heber, Steven (Paula) Day, Provo, Carl (RaDawna) Day, Mona, and Charlene (Ken) Beckstrand, Heber; sister Norma Beesley, St. George, 26 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Phyllis Day and Fern Gibson, and his wife Lela.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Sept 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Heber North Stake Center, 521 East 500 North, Heber City. Viewings will be Tuesday, Sept 12, 6-8 pm and Wednesday 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Internment will be in the Heber City Cemetery. Arrangements by Heber Valley Funeral Home.
