George Ashton Smith

July 1, 1945 — July 28, 2022

George Ashton Smith, loving husband, father, and friend to all, passed away suddenly on
July 28, 2022, at the age of 77.

George was born on July 1, 1945 in Muscatine, Iowa to Stephen and Loraine Smith. At an
early age, he grew up learning the value of hard work on his family’s farm in Porterville,
Utah. He had a paper route at five years old, set bowling pins, along with many other jobs
he held to help support his eight siblings. He graduated from Morgan High School on
May 21, 1963, where he played football and wrestled.

After high school, he attended Utah State University and joined the National Guard. He
later met Linda Davis; they were married for 33 years and had four children together. His
children were his pride and joy. They raised their children in Centerville before settling
in the Heber Valley.

George was a wonderful father and was very involved in his children’s lives. He coached
his children’s and grandchildren’s sports and loved to teach them his “chess tricks”. He
shared his love of fishing, hunting, and traveling with his entire family. Later in life, he
cared for his mother until she passed away on July 28, 2016.

He always made the holidays special. Many will recall the giant personalized Mindy Mint
truffles from Mrs. Cavanaugh’s that he delivered to his family members every Valentine’s
Day and Easter.

George married his wife, Karen on February 20, 2018. Karen supported him in all his
endeavors. Together they traveled, attended Jazz basketball games, and spent time with
her wonderful family. Karen even got him to take her to the symphony!… once.

George had an incredible work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. He led construction
projects across the West and helped build his family’s homes. He worked up until the day
he passed away and was packing to go to Lake Powell and Alaska with his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Loraine Smith, and his sister Mona.
He is survived by his four children: Jennifer Jolley (Troy), Jami Hewlett (Mike), Bart
Smith (Mari), and Bret Smith (Holly), his wife Karen and her Children: Scott Lutes
(Kelli), Shaun Mitchell (Kevin), Holly Johns (David), Stacy Aguayo, Steven Lutes(Cascia)
and Susan Gunn, his 28 grandchildren, and his siblings: Stephanie, Melvin, Vicki, Jody,
Blanche, Joel, Lynelle.

His family is holding a celebration of his life. It will be held at 6pm on Wednesday August
3, 2022, at Soldier Hollow Nordic Lodge.

“No matter what we needed, he was there.”
