Fern Clark Spanos

Born first child of LeGrand and Retta Martin Clark on 9 December 1932 in Evanston, Wyoming. She admired her coal mining ancestors for their incredibly dangerous and difficult lives and especially their strong wives. She cherished her life growing up in Colorado along the Colorado River as a child and the Yampa River where she learned hard work as her dad’s only “son” on a dairy ranch.

Her siblings were Elene Fae Danielian (deceased), Lela Janet Patterson, Peggy Lyn (Alan) Call, Richard LeGrand (Charlyn) Clark, and Cay Grover.

She married her best friend and companion Michael Anthony Spanos 23 August 1969. They have eight children: Kent (Cathy), Kipp (Wendy), Todd (Julie), Daren (Sally), Sue (Wells), Rhet (CinDee), Meghan (Shawn), and Seth (Janice) and 38 grandchildren and 70+ great-grandchildren. In addition, they have shared their home with 8 foster children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, and her son, Kent.

Fern graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in English/Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She worked at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah, Heber City Justice Court Judge for 22 ½ years, but most loved teaching literature and writing to eighth graders at Wasatch Middle School for eleven years.

She has had an abiding and fervent testimony of Jesus Christ. She began teaching Junior Sunday School at age thirteen and has been a dedicated worker since. With her husband, they completed missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Winnipeg, Canada serving the First Nations people in and around Regina, Saskatchewan; serving in the Durban, South Africa mission working with the Zulu people on the Madadeni and Ezakheni townships and in Ladysmith; serving in East and West Malaysia with Iban, Indian, and Chinese people; and working at the church employment center in Heber City.

A viewing will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 6:00-8:00 PM and again on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 9:00-10:30 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM at the Heber 6th Ward, 1365 E Center Street, Heber City, Utah 84032. Interment will follow at the Park City Cemetery, 1300 Kearns Boulevard, Park City, Utah 84060.
