Eva Stokes Stubbs

February 12, 1927 — July 30, 2018

Eva Stokes Stubbs was born February 12, 1927, in Logan, Utah, at the closest hospital to Franklin, Idaho, where the family lived. Eva and her twin sister Orpha Gardner were 5th and 6th of the 7 children of Henry Stokes and Edna Packer Stokes. The family moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, when the twins were toddlers. The twins were flutists, baton twirlers for the high school band, and graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1944. Eva and Orpha attended BYU, were baton twirlers for the BYU marching band, and played flute in the orchestra. In the fall of 1945, Eva met Darrel Stubbs, who played oboe in the BYU orchestra while home on Army furlough. The flutist and oboist were married July 26, 1946, in the Logan Temple. Eva was ever the supportive wife and mother, bearing and raising their five children while living in New York, Indiana, Hawaii, Los Angeles, and Provo, as Darrel completed degrees and eventually joined the BYU music faculty and the Utah Symphony. Eva also played flute in the Utah Symphony when an extra was needed and in the Utah Valley Symphony regularly. Darrel and Eva later toured China, playing oboe and flute duets, as Darrel taught master classes. After retiring, they served a mission to Russia (1993-1995), where they performed, served in branches, and Darrel was counselor to the mission president. In 2001, Darrel and Eva sold their Provo home and built a home in Midway, for their remaining years.
Eva served in numerous church positions, but her greatest accomplishment was being the best Mom to her children. She loved being with family, whether her siblings or her children. And she always enjoyed watching Utah Jazz and BYU sporting events on TV. On July 30, 2018, at age 91, Eva passed on to reunite with her husband Darrel, her parents, her older siblings, Quinn, Eldon, Wayne, and LaDean, and with two grandchildren. Eva is survived by her sisters, Orpha (and Morris) Gardner and Edie Van Noy; and her children, Brian (and Silvia) Stubbs, Eric (and Lola) Stubbs, Rita (and Brent) Crooks, Alan Stubbs, and Carrie (and Griff) Fitzgerald; 32 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren with more on the way; and her first great-great-grandchild is soon to be born. The funeral will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the LDS chapel, 250 East 200 South in Midway, Utah, followed by interment in the Charleston Cemetery. Viewings will be Friday 6-8 p.m. (Aug 10) and again Saturday morning 9-10:30 a.m. at the same chapel.
