Barabara Eileen Lighthall Mathis: a woman of strength, courage, and intelligence. She inspired all of us to do our best every day.
Barbara was born in Johnstown, New York on Pearl Harbor Day in 1946. As a daughter of an Airforce officer, she lived in many different parts of the country. Upon her father's retirement from the military, her family settled in Utah.
Barbara graduated from Clearfield High School and was awarded the Bamberger Scholarship. She graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. She worked hard and was thrilled to be able to buy her own car, a 1968 Pontiac LeMans.
On a blind date, Barbara met the love of her life, Robert Mathis. They married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1971. They happily raised their three children in the charming town of Midway. Barbara loved being a mother and was dedicated to her children. Her battle with cancer prevented her from having more children, but she won the war with cancer- 3 times!
Barbara's nursing career included McKay-Dee Hospital, Orem School District, Wasatch County Hospital, Director of Nursing at London Springs Care Center, HIC Home Health, and Vista Care Hospice. Her favorite position was teaching a CNA class to high school students; she was very proud of her students. Beyond her professional career, she opened her heart and home to anyone in need of her nursing skills. Without pay, she frequently made home visits to friends and neighbors in need of regular treatments.
Barbara's life is a testament of the love she has for her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Barbara was surrounded by her loving family as she celebrated her 77th birthday on December 7th, 2023. The day after her birthday on earth, she had a second celebration with those waiting for her in heaven, including her husband Bob Mathis, parents Donald and Eileen Lighthall, and brother Alan Lighthall.
Those missing Barbara on earth include her three children Jason (Marie) Mathis, Brian (Camille) Lighthall, and MaryAnn (Marcly) Cineus; brother Jay (Nan) Lighthall and her 10 beloved grandchildren Ashton, Bradly, Kaitlynn, Phoebie, Alan, Evalynn, Zahara, London, Tommy and Wally.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to Intermountain Homecare &Hospice, especially Megan and Brittany. And to Barbara's special angel and friend, Toni Teig, for lovingly serving her for many years.
