ANTHONY CHRISTOPHER DICKEY son of K Shirlan Dickey and Jolyn Anderson Dickey was born on 5 December 1969 in Salt Lake City, UT and died on June 13, 2016 in Alexandria,VA as a result of degenerative health problems. Anthony (Tony to his family) grew up in North Ogden, UT and attended Bates Elementary, North Ogden Junior High School, and Weber High School, class of 1988. He also attended classes at Weber State University and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC. He was a gifted photographer and talented musician. He worked in various fields including as an environmental activist, disc jockey, courier for ABC News, bartender, builder, and for the last 10 years of his life installing AV equipment as a stage hand. He lived in Utah from birth until 2001 when he moved to the DC area to help care for his bedridden mother.
Anthony had amazing personal magnetism and made friends wherever he went. He was a great teller of stories and his life was filled with adventures from British Columbia to Chiapas, Mexico to Yangshuo, China, all of which gave him great source material. He cared little for material possessions and was incredibly generous, often giving his last $10 to a pan handler. He lived life on his own terms, took life as it came, and rarely worried about the future. He was incredibly willing to help others and was exactly the type of person you could count on when there was a need or in a crisis. Even when life wasn't going well for him, which was the case near the end of his life, he was always cracking jokes and trying to find the humor in difficult circumstances. He had a big heart and was very sensitive. He was the kind of person who could tell if others were down and would always try to find a way to cheer them up. Anthony never married or had children of his own. He was a hopeless romantic and had a number of long-term relationships. He never really got over any of his breakups. He left a wake of broken hearts behind him. He was wonderful with children and they loved him. He won the “World's Greatest Uncle” award going away. He enjoyed playing disc golf and watching professional football with his brother-in-law Michael, becoming a huge Redskins fan after relocating to DC. He had eclectic, interesting taste in music, was an avid fan of romantic comedies (once winning $25,000 on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Movies Week) and relished mayonnaise in all its forms—be it straight up, in fry sauce, or ranch dressing.
Anthony loved his family fiercely and would do anything to protect them. He was especially close to his sister and only sibling Lisa, sharing a special bond as they endured hardships and joys together. They, along with brother-in-law Michael and other family members, worked together to care for their mother during her long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. A self-described Mama's boy, Anthony was preceded in death by his mother Jolyn in 2008 and Tony took her death very hard. Similarly, when he lost his beloved canine companion Quixote in 2007, he was devastated. He was born to love, and so to suffer. He is survived by his father Shirlan of Aquila, AZ, his sister Lisa Marie Hale, his brother-in-law Michael Hale, and his nieces Bronwen, Manon, and Willa and his nephews Mason and Griffin, all from Leesburg, Virgina. He is also survived by bunches of aunts, uncles and cousins in the Anderson and Dickey extended family. His ashes will be interred next to his mother and grandmother in Midway, UT.
