Richard Guy Olpin

Richard Guy Olpin passed away peacefully in his home on January 26, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. The fifth of nine children, he was born May 25, 1931, to Joseph Olpin and Svea Emerensia Violet Larsson in Heber City, Utah. Guy loved Heber Valley and spent his lifetime in mortuary service to the people of Wasatch and Summit Counties.

Guy graduated from Wasatch High School in 1949, then attended BYU while working with his father and his brother Ted at Olpin Mortuary, the family business, where they also provided local ambulance service. His son Mark later joined in the business. Guy served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return home, he married Shirley Louise Hewitson September 8, 1954, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They are the parents of seven children: Linda (Steve) Neiswender, Karen (Merrill ) Nelson, Mark L. (Dawn) Olpin, Kathy (Kris) Gruwell, Jeanne (Bob) Gunnell, Donald K. Olpin (deceased) and Brian J. Olpin.

Guy served on the Heber City Council, the Wasatch School District Foundation Board, the Wasatch County Jeep Posse, and the Heber City Chamber of Commerce. He also served as president of the Utah Funeral Directors Association and was awarded the UFDA Lifetime Service Award.

Guy was a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ and served valiantly in many church callings including Priest Advisor, Ward Clerk, Stake YMMIA, Seventies Quorum Presidency, High Priest Group Leader, Stake Activities Chairman, Counselor in the Wasatch Stake Presidency, and Sealer in the Provo Temple for twelve years. Guy also served as president of the Joseph Olpin Family Organization where he directed the extended family in doing family history work. He felt a great love and reverence for his forefathers.

Guy found heaven on earth with his sweetheart Shirley, and was so grateful for the loving care she provided in his later years, as he endured his physical limitations with courage, grace and dignity. He is survived by Shirley, six of their children, twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. Also survived by his beloved brother and sisters: Ted (Nancy) Olpin, Inazelle Knight, Clara (George) Snell, Violet (Paul) Loertscher, and June (Hardy) Anderson; brothers-in-law, Bruce Wasden and Richard Haight. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, and sisters Betty (Lowell) Coleman, Mary Wasden, Audrey Haight and brother-in-law, George Knight.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 12:00 noon in the Heber City North Stake Center, 550 East 500 North, Heber City, Utah. Viewings will be held Friday, January 31st from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 1st from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. at the same location. Interment will be in the Heber City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by the Hullinger Mortuary and the Probst Family Funeral Home.
